Project Overview:
Technology Used: Leica RTC360 3D Laser Scanner
Duration on Site: 2 Days
Total Scans Captured: 178 Scans
Scope of Work
Our objective was to perform precise 3D laser scanning of a historic building undergoing renovation in Virginia, Minnesota. The primary focus was on capturing detailed data of the heritage-protected façade, which needed to be preserved and documented accurately as part of the redevelopment effort.
Challenges
The scanning operation was carried out in harsh winter conditions, with heavy snow and sub-zero temperatures. These extreme climate factors required adaptability and careful planning to ensure both safety and data quality within a reduced field time.
Methodology
Despite the weather limitations, our team executed 178 strategic scans over two days using the Leica RTC360. We prioritized exterior scanning of the heritage façade and essential structural elements.
Deliverables
-
Accurate point cloud dataset with focus on façade geometry
-
Registered scans with historic features clearly defined
-
Scanning log and photographic documentation of site conditions
Outcome
The project was completed on time, despite the weather-related constraints, and delivered valuable digital documentation for the historic building's preservation. The client received reliable scan data to guide future BIM modeling and architectural planning while honoring the structure’s historic character.
